100 Year Old Cigar – The cigar to drink

100 year old cigar - Deep red cocktail withe chocolate garnish and smoky taste.

Recipe

50 ml | 1 2/3 oz › Jamaican Rum
15 ml | 1/2 oz › Bénédictine
15 ml | 1/2 oz › Cynar
10 ml | 1/3 oz › Peated Scotch
3 Dash › Angostura Bitters
3 Spray › Absinth

Spray the inside of the glass with absinthe, stir all the other ingredients except the absinthe on ice until cold and strain into the glass.

The story of the 100 year old cigar

 The 100 Year Old Cigar consists of rum, Cynar, Bénédictine, smoky Scotch, Angostura and absinthe. Admittedly, the list of ingredients sounds as if someone has blindly picked six times in the bar cabinet. Yet this short drink is a little stroke of genius that has quickly established itself on my personal bar menu.

This drink was created by Maks Pazuniak at the Jupiter Disco in Bushwick. Shortly afterwards, in 2016, the journalist Carey Jones presented it in her book „Brooklyn Bartender“. Subsequently, the 100 Year Old Cigar made the rounds on the internet when the site „Serious Eats“ wrote an article about Pazuniak’s „smoke bomb“. German cocktail bloggers also gradually became aware of this aroma monster. Among them were two of my idol bloggers: Cocktailbart and Galumbi.

The ingredients
Bénédictine, Cynar, Angostura and absinthe are virtually an integral part of the 100 Year Old Cigar. In addition to the rum, the Smokey Scotch also offers scope. In my recipe, we use Laphroaig 10, which has a rich smoky note. Exactly what we need for an old cigar. If this is too much of a good thing for you, I recommend the Bowmore 12.

Who is the 100 Year Old Cynar for?
This drink is special. Very much so. And it is strong. Of the six ingredients in the drink, there is not one that does not contain alcohol. But even that shouldn’t put you off, because the Bénédictine and Cynar liqueurs add up to enough sugar.
