THE HiSTORY OF the remember the Maine
The Remember the Maine is a variation of the classic Manhattan, but with a touch of absinthe and cherry liqueur. The name of the drink is a reference to a historical event that sparked a war between the United States and Spain in 1898.
The USS Maine was a naval ship that was sent to Havana, Cuba, to protect the American interests during the Cuban War of Independence. On February 15, 1898, the ship exploded and sank in the harbor. The cause of the explosion was never conclusively determined, but the American public and press blamed Spain, who was ruling Cuba at the time.
The cocktail was created by Charles H. Baker Jr., a journalist and author who traveled around the world and collected recipes for exotic drinks. He published the recipe for the Remember the Maine in his 1939 book „The Gentleman’s Companion“.
