The history of the Padovani Cocktail

The Padovani Cocktail is a delightful two-part drink made with Scotch Whisky and St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur. Its origin can be traced back to the early 2000s during the bar renaissance.

Simon Difford, the man behind the extensive Difford’s Guide recipe collection, played a pivotal role. In 2006, he was busy promoting St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur. Meanwhile, his friend Xavier Padovani, a brand ambassador for the blended Scotch whisky “Monkey Shoulder,” was also in the mix.

The original recipe called for equal parts of Scotch and liqueur – after all, they wanted to sell St. Germain. However, over time, the proportions shifted. The current recommended recipe, inspired by the Hamburg bar Le Lion, features 6 cl Single Malt or Blended Scotch Whisky and 2 cl Elderflower Liqueur (St. Germain). The liqueur now takes a more subtle role, making up only 25% of the drink.

Interestingly, St. Germain earned the nickname “Bartender’s Ketchup” around that time. Despite this, no serious alternative has emerged. Whether you choose a peated or light Scotch, the floral notes of the liqueur complement it beautifully. Just be careful not to overshadow the whisky.

For a straightforward Padovani Cocktail, try it with Monkey Shoulder. If you’re feeling adventurous, opt for something like a Shackleton Blended Malt.
