The story of the Bensonhurst Cocktail
The Bensonhurst is a modern variation of the classic Brooklyn cocktail, which itself is a riff on the Manhattan cocktail. It was created by Chad Solomon, a bartender who worked at Milk & Honey and Pegu Club in New York City in 2006. He named it after the neighborhood in south Brooklyn where he lived, which has a large Italian-American population.
The Bensonhurst cocktail is made with rye whiskey, dry vermouth, maraschino liqueur, and Cynar, a bitter Italian liqueur made from artichokes. The Cynar adds a distinctive earthy and herbal flavor to the drink, balancing the sweetness of the maraschino and the spiciness of the rye.
