THE HISTORY OF THE ADONIS COCKTAIL
The Adonis cocktail was invented sometime in the mid-1880s at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. It was created in honor of the Broadway musical of the same name – Adonis was the first show to run for 500 performances, making it the longest-running Broadway musical at the time.
WHICH SHERRY FOR THE ADONIS COCKTAIL?
The choice of sherry depends on the vermouth used. This is because two-part cocktails (with a little bitters) can make it difficult to achieve a balanced result. We already know this from the Manhattan cocktail, which is close in structure to the Adonis cocktail.
Admittedly, I only have the Lustau Amontillado „Los Arcos“ to hand in the „Medium Dry Sherry“ segment. Other well-known, somewhat cheaper brands are Osborne and Sandeman. Both also have medium dry sherries in their range. So, we only have the Lustau. The only question that remains is the matching sweet vermouth.
THE SUCCESSFUL SHERRY – VERMOUTH COMBINATION
I really like the combination with the Punt e Mes, which I also like to use in my Negroni or Blood and Sand cocktail. In a 1:1 ratio, it is just fruity and bitter enough to stand up to the dry, nutty Lustau. The experiment with the Antica Formula is also pleasing. Unfortunately, my otherwise beloved Dolin Rouge vermouthvermouth does not perform well at all in this combination. Somehow it’s a touch too fruity. Perhaps we need to play with the mixing ratio here and add a little more sherry to the recipe. Unfortunately, I didn’t have Lustau’s own vermouth available during the tests. It is certainly worth trying in the Adonis cocktail.
