THE HISTORY OF THE GIMLET COCKTAIL

The Gimlet Cocktail is a minimalist, citrus-driven classic with British naval roots. It gained popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a solution to a very real problem: scurvy. British sailors were required to consume citrus to maintain their health on long voyages, and mixing lime cordial with gin became a convenient — and rather enjoyable — method.

The name “Gimlet” is said to come from Rear-Admiral Sir Thomas Gimlette, who allegedly introduced the practice of mixing gin with lime cordial to make the medicine more palatable. Another theory references the gimlet tool, used for drilling — a nod to the drink’s “penetrating” strength and simplicity.

The original Gimlet used Rose’s Lime Cordial, patented in 1867 as a shelf-stable lime juice product with added sugar. Today, many bartenders favor a modern, fresh-lime approach with simple syrup for brighter acidity and cleaner flavor.

Both styles remain valid: the classic cordial version offers a nostalgic sweetness and softness, while the fresh version is tarter, drier, and more modern — ideal for those who love crisp, no-nonsense cocktails like the Daiquiri or Martini.

THE RIGHT GIN FOR A GIMLET

The Gimlet’s minimalist recipe makes one thing crystal clear: your gin matters. So choose a bottle that brings clarity, balance, and botanical character.

For those who like their Gimlet with bold definition and serious gin presence, Sipsmith V.J.O.P. is an outstanding choice. Bottled at 57.7% ABV, this navy-strength gin is packed with juniper and intense botanical depth. Its higher proof allows it to cut cleanly through both lime cordial, making it perfect for the fresh version of the Gimlet, where clarity and strength are key.

Expect a bigger mouthfeel, longer finish, and a cocktail that drinks drier and more assertively — without overwhelming the balance. If you want to experience a Gimlet that really showcases the gin in all its aromatic glory, this is the bottle to reach for.
