THE HISTORY OF THE MAI TAI COCKTAIL

The Mai Tai Cocktail is one of the most iconic and misunderstood rum cocktails of all time. Born in 1944 in Oakland, California, it was created by Victor “Trader Vic” Bergeron, one of the fathers of tiki cocktail culture. According to legend, after mixing the drink for some Tahitian friends, one of them exclaimed “Mai Tai-Roa Aé!” — meaning “out of this world!” in Tahitian. The name stuck.

Although often confused with overly sweet or heavily garnished versions found in resort bars, the original Mai Tai was a serious, spirit-forward cocktail, showcasing high-quality aged rum with subtle tropical elements from curaçao, lime, and almond (orgeat).

Soon after Trader Vic’s version rose to fame, rival tiki master Don the Beachcomber claimed he created a similar drink earlier. A long-standing debate followed — but what truly matters today is the balance and integrity of the recipe.

The drink became a cornerstone of Tiki culture in the mid-20th century and a symbol of post-war American escapism. It quickly spread from California to Hawaii and far beyond, eventually becoming one of the most internationally recognized rum cocktails in history.

THE RIGHT RUM FOR A MAI TAI COCKTAIL

The original version used a now-unavailable 17-year-old Jamaican J. Wray & Nephew rum. If you’re aiming for a bold  Mai Tai Cocktail, few rums can rival the impact of Smith & Cross Traditional Jamaican Rum. This overproof, pot still rum from Hampden Estate is famous for its unapologetically funky character.

TIKI COCKTAIL PERFECTION IN A GLASS

The Mai Tai Cocktail is the ultimate ambassador of Tiki culture. But when made properly, it’s so much more than a tropical gimmick. It’s spirit-driven, refreshing, and timeless, a perfect blend of bold rum and bright citrus with just enough sweetness to keep you coming back.

Whether you’re a seasoned rum enthusiast or just building your home bar, the Mai Tai is a must-have in your classic cocktail repertoire.
